Be vigilant with used furniture and bed bugs

It is common knowledge that bed bugs get into your home by hitching a ride in. Per the New York State Department of Health:

They can come from other infested areas or from used furniture. They can hitch a ride in luggage, purses, backpacks, or other items placed on soft or upholstered surfaces.

This was how I got my bed bug infestation over ten years ago: buying a used futon on Craigslist. Back then I had no idea what bed bugs were.

Buy with caution, inspect your furniture before buying!

My experience was so terrible I would go as far as saying avoid buying used furniture unless you absolutely have to. If it’s something you’re set on, make sure to thoroughly inspect furniture before bringing it into your living space.

Ask the seller for reassurance

“Did you check for bed bugs?” It’s a simple question and tells a lot based on how they answer. If they don’t know what you’re talking about, be sure to really inspect it. Be extra dilligent with furniture that is more complex in design. The more folds and creases just means more spaces a bed bug could be hiding.

Don’t learn this lesson the hard way

I bought a used futon back in 2011 that caused a bed bug infestation in my studio apartment. As a recent college graduate on a budget I was looking for steals when it came to furniture. It makes sense; buying used furniture is cost efficient and recycling furniture is great.
