Bed bug foggers didn't work for me

I wanted to share my experience with bed bug foggers in case it helps someone else avoid wasting time (and money). When I first discovered bed bugs in my studio apartment, I panicked and bought a fogger because it seemed like a quick, affordable fix. Just release the fog and the bugs are gone, right? Unfortunately, that was not the case.
I used a fogger three separate times. Each time, the bed bugs came back like nothing had happened. I live in a small 400 sq ft. studio that’s part of an older building with tons of cracks and crevices. I now realize those tiny hiding spots gave the bugs plenty of places to escape the fog. It just didn’t work.
But the foggers on Amazon have 4-star reviews… shouldn’t they work?
I fell for the positive reviews at first, too. But after some digging, I found out that Amazon’s ratings can be manipulated by fake or incentivized reviews. Always check the critical reviews first — a lot of people report that foggers didn’t help at all, or even made things worse by driving the bugs deeper into their homes.
Eventually I gave up on DIY methods and called in a professional pest control team. That’s what ultimately worked for me.
The University of Kentucky Entomology Department also recommends ditching foggers
I later learned that the University of Kentucky Entomology team regularly advises against using foggers for bed bug control. Here’s why:
- They rarely kill enough to solve the problem
- The pesticide residue ends up on your furniture, floor, and other surfaces — not just where bugs hide
- Some foggers are flammable and have caused house fires
Editor's Note
We’ve seen a lot of stories like this — and they’re backed by experts. The University of Kentucky’s Entomology Department advises against using foggers for bed bug infestations. They don’t penetrate hiding spots, can leave harmful residue on surfaces, and have even caused house fires.
